Character Over Credentials: Your Hidden Job-Winning Advantage

How can you get hired for a job if you are not 100% qualified?

I have many clients asking me if they should still apply for a job if they don't meet all the qualifications.

Believe it or not, there is something that can make you stand out even above skills, education, and experiences and can help convince companies that you will be the best ROI.

The secret is portraying key character traits. Here are the top 5 character traits companies value and how to make them visible to employers.

1. Integrity: Share instances where you made tough decisions or upheld ethical standards. For example - “In my previous role, I identified a financial discrepancy and promptly reported it, leading to stricter audit procedures.”

2. Optimism: Emphasize situations where your positive attitude made a difference - "During a high-pressure project, my positive attitude helped keep the team motivated and focused. Former colleagues can attest to my ability to maintain optimism even in challenging situations."

3. Curiosity and Learning: Showing you researched the company during networking or interviews can demonstrate this trait - “I see that your company has a new CEO, what are some new initiatives that have come out of this change?”

4. Work Ethic: Prepare for behavioral interviews by highlighting your commitment: -“I worked late hours and weekends during new product releases, meeting critical deadlines.”

5. Coachability: Mention relevant training or courses you completed, especially those suggested by mentors or supervisors - “Completed advanced Excel training, improving efficiency in data analysis tasks that was suggested by my manager, which really made a difference in spinning up spreadsheets to help with data-based decisions for the company.”

Remember, character traits matter—sometimes even more than qualifications!
